How to Create More Time in Your Day as a Working Mum
Feeling like there’s never enough time in the day?
As a working mum, I know the juggle all too well. Work deadlines, school runs, dinner prep, life admin - the list never ends. For a long time, I felt like I was just reacting to the day rather than owning it. And the more I tried to do it all, the more exhausted and overwhelmed I felt.
But over time, I realised something: it’s not about cramming in more - it’s about doing less with more intention. Small changes can have a huge impact, and I want to share three strategies that helped me reclaim my time.
Prioritise like a pro
The truth is, you can’t do everything - and that’s okay. The key is knowing what actually matters. Each evening, jot down the top three things you must accomplish the next day. Not the endless to-do list, just the things that move the needle in your work, life, or wellbeing.
This clarity stops you from spending time on things that feel productive but aren’t truly important. You’ll start each day with focus instead of overwhelm.
Use time-blocking
Time-blocking has been a game-changer for me. Instead of constantly switching between tasks, I dedicate specific time slots to work, family, and even rest. It’s so much easier to be productive when you’re not trying to multitask a work email while cooking dinner and answering a million “Mummy?” requests!
Even 30 minutes of focused effort can achieve more than hours of scattered, distracted work. And don’t forget to add buffer time for the unexpected - because life will happen.
Say “no” (without guilt)
If you’re anything like me, saying “no” can feel uncomfortable. We’re wired to be helpful, to take on just one more thing, to keep everyone else happy. But every time we say yes to something that isn’t a priority, we’re saying no to something that is.
Protecting your time and energy isn’t selfish - it’s necessary. Whether it’s declining extra commitments or setting boundaries at work and home, saying no is one of the most powerful ways to create more space in your day.
It’s not about doing more—it’s about doing what matters
Time is our most valuable resource, and we can be intentional about how we use it.
So this week, I invite you to try just one of these strategies. See what shifts. Notice how you feel. And remember - you deserve time for you, too.
What’s one small way you’ll reclaim your time this week?
